Building Science

Building science is the study of the interaction between the various materials, products and systems used in building construction, the occupants of these buildings, and the environment in which they are located.

Many of us in the building industry share the view that the construction of a building should be designed as a system, using building science as our guide.

In fact, "Building Science" defines quality for me.  When I talk about building homes that are "High Quality", I'm talking about homes that meet basic building science principles that ensure the home will be energy efficient, comfortable, durable, healthy to live in, etc...  Without meeting these standards, it doesn't matter to me how big a house is, or how many fireplaces it has, or if it has an indoor swimming pool.  Without meeting basic building science standards, a home is simply not high in quality.   There are thousands of so called "high end" homes in Maine that are not all that comfortable to live in, that have moisture related problems, mold problems, air quality problems, and use a lot more energy than they should.  Just because you've got the money for a fancy house with lots of expensive features, doesn't mean you got a high quality home, at least not by the definition of "high quality" used by this home builder.
